George Floyd’s Family To Receive $27m Settlement From Minneapolis City Council
Minneapolis City Council have agreed to pay $27 million to the family of George Floyd to settle a civil lawsuit over his killing in police custody.
The settlement was approved by the City Council during a closed session today (March 12).
It comes weeks before the trial is set to begin for the former officer, Derek Chauvin, who has been charged with murdering Floyd.
Last July, Floyd’s family filed a federal lawsuit against Minneapolis and the four officers involved in the arrest which led to his death in May last year – which sparked protests worldwide.
Among the issues mentioned in the lawsuit were neck restraints and police policies and training.
Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Floyd’s family, said in an interview today: “The city needs to exhibit responsible leadership in the face of the horrific tragedy that really was a watershed moment for America.”
The civil lawsuit is separate from the ongoing criminal trial, in which jury selection is currently underway.
